A lot of people need the montage for a run through with the venue before the actual date of the event.  I will need 5 weeks to complete your montage. Count back 5 weeks from the day you need the montage in your hands and that will be the date I need all of the photos/videos.

I recommend keeping your sections as even as possible. Therefore, if you're going for a 10 minute montage (200 photos) and 5 sections, that's 40 photos per section. That equals about a 2 minute section - which is 1 song. Strive to keep all sections within 5 (+/-) photos of one anothr.

I love videos in montages - I think it adds fantastic texture. But I always tell people to avoid videos that are heavy in narration. Videos with singing, talking, theater - they can be difficult to hear and cause a stop in the music play. Stick to videos with lots of action - running, jumping, playing, dancing, sports, etc. Those are the best! And I recommend keeping videos to 5-7 seconds, max. 
 

Anywhere between 1-2 videos per section is ideal. But you don't need one for every section if you don't have one. 

As far as songs go, I recommend one song per section. Generally speaking, every section of your montage has a vibe - the friends section is a lot different than your family section. So, song choices should reflect that. Additionally, a song change is a great way to signal the change in sections (in addition to any title work). It just keeps the pace of the montage flowing.

If you're not using sections, I recommend changing music every two minutes. This is enough time to settle into a song, but get dragged down.
